X-Men: Days of Future Past Trailer

X-Men: Days of Future Past

It must be trailer season off in Hollywood seeing as they seem to be coming rather fast and furious these days. This time around we are looking at the next entry into the X-Men franchise, which brings Bryan Singer back to the helm after skipping two Wolverine movies, X-Men 3: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class. Given how all but the last of those has not really lived up the expectations of the first two X-Men movies (both directed by Singer), I would say that his return is something to be welcomed. This first trailer would also seem to bear this out, with a more contemplative look at the characters rather than the usually action packed fight sequences we tend to get from superhero trailers.

On the downside, I suspect that if you are not already familiar with the Days of Future Past storyline then you are not really going to understand much of this trailer. It sets up the time travel angle, with Wolverine being the time travel agent instead of Kitty Pryde, but otherwise is a bit of a jumble with scenes set in the future mixed liberally between those set in the past. It is a convenient way to show the new characters (such as Bishop and Blink, though I expect most people will not recognize the latter) interspersed with both the team from First Class and the original trilogy, but it does not do much for storytelling purposes. That said, once you get through the mess there are some interesting bits thrown about. I am particularly fond of the sequence with old Xavier (Patrick Stewart) having a conversation with young Xavier (James McAvoy). I hope that gets the time on the big screen that it deserves in the final cut.

Taken as a whole it is a well constructed trailer. It starts off soft, contemplative before jumping into the far more dramatic sequences and then ends with the somber talk between Stewart and McAvoy. The music from The Thin Red Line is also a nice touch, and it makes me wonder if Hans Zimmer is involved with the soundtrack in any capacity. If the trailer is any indication of the final movie, I think we are in for a bit of a treat with Days of Future Past. It is not like there was any doubt that I was going to see this movie, but this trailer has definitely made me more excited to go and see it.
